The very first meeting of the newly installed Region Six Regional Democratic Council (RDC) descended into heated exchanges on Wednesday, as sharp disagreements over procedural issues and unresolved health-related matters dominated the session.
The meeting, which lasted just under two hours, saw multiple confrontations—most notably involving A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Regional Councillor Colin Moore, who challenged the interpretation of council procedures and demanded answers regarding recent incidents at the New Amsterdam Hospital.
Moore pressed Regional Health Officer Dr. Verneshia Kyodar on two matters: allegations by a young mother who claimed her newborn was abruptly taken from her. At the same time, she was a patient at the hospital, and the recent maternal tragedy in which Latoya Griffith and her newborn died during delivery.
“I asked specific questions… Was there an investigation launched, and if so, what are the findings?” Moore asserted, visibly frustrated as he accused officials of deflecting and providing insufficient information.
Dr. Kyodar maintained that the welfare department and attending physicians were managing both cases, noting that welfare officers were in communication with the affected mother.
Tensions escalated further when Moore clashed with People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Councillor Shan Smith, who proposed the removal of urgent matters from the council’s agenda—an approach Moore argued was unprecedented and unacceptable.
The confrontations overshadowed what was intended to be a procedural first sitting of the new council, marking a turbulent start to the region’s 2026 administrative cycle.
