PRESIDENT ALI URGED TO CONVENE 13TH SITTING OF NATIONAL ASSEMBLY – POLITICAL COMMENTATOR

President Irfaan Ali’s July 3rd proclamation to dissolve the 12th sitting of the National Assembly set the stage for Guyana’s general and regional elections held on September 1. The move, made under Article 72 of the constitution, was a necessary step in the democratic process. However, questions are now mounting over the government’s delay in reconvening parliament, as the constitutional four-month window nears expiration.

Under Article 67, the president is mandated to appoint the time and place for the new session of parliament within four months of its dissolution. With that deadline fast approaching, political analyst GHk Lall expressed concern over the absence of an official announcement regarding the 13th sitting of the National Assembly.

“You’ve got new ministers, some in new portfolios,” GHk Lall noted. “By the fourth week of September, there should have been an announcement that parliament would meet either by the end of that week or early the next.”

GHk Lall emphasized that the timely convening of parliament is not just a procedural necessity—it’s a signal of governmental accountability and productivity. “You want parliament to be humming,” he said, “so the people of Guyana can see their business is being tended to after all the noise and promises of the campaign trail.”

Despite the urgency, GHk Lall admitted he was unaware of any specific reason preventing President Ali from fulfilling his constitutional obligation under Article 69.

As the nation awaits clarity, the delay has sparked debate over governance and transparency in the post-election period.
