President Irfaan Ali on Sunday turned the sod for a massive $2.5 billion aircraft terminal at the Bartica Airport—an aviation project expected to transform Region Seven and accelerate Guyana’s broader connectivity, tourism expansion, and economic diversification goals.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Ali said the initiative signals the continued reinvestment of Guyana’s national wealth into long-term development. He commended the BK Group for its leadership in advancing large-scale investments nationwide.

“This is an exciting development and one that is transformative in its nature and character,” the President said.
“Bartica is changing—and changing rapidly—and it is all part of the transformation taking place nationally.”

A Major Boost for Regional Connectivity and Tourism

The President highlighted that the new terminal will serve as a critical aviation hub, helping to open up hinterland communities by air, expand tourism products, reduce transportation costs, and enhance services for both residents and businesses.

He emphasized the government’s plan to expand regional access and support local food production by improving transport corridors.

“When places are easier to reach, they become easier to grow,” President Ali stated.
“Within 12 months, we will fly food from out of the interior—whether from Lethem or Bartica—directly into CARICOM countries. In 12 months, we will get it done.”

Unlocking New Opportunities for Interior Regions

The President said the new Bartica terminal will shorten travel times, lower operational expenses for aircraft operators, and create new space for sector innovation, including:

  • Drone-based logistics
  • Emergency medevac support
  • Direct export of interior-grown food into CARICOM markets

“When Guyana moves, every region must move with it… when development comes, it must come for all Guyanese,” he affirmed.

Aviation Sector Urged to Reduce Airfares

President Ali acknowledged major improvements across the aviation sector, including the acquisition of new assets and the modernization of infrastructure. However, he urged operators to adopt fairer pricing systems that reflect the extensive government support the industry has received.

“We have given the aviation sector enormous incentives—removal of taxes and fuel,” he said.
“It is time that the aviation sector returns that support to the citizens of our country. There is no way the aviation sector cannot at this time at least reduce air transport by 15%.”

The Bartica terminal project is expected to deliver significant economic, social, and logistical benefits once completed, positioning Region Seven as a modern gateway to Guyana’s interior.
