President Irfaan Ali has announced that his government will unveil a comprehensive package of measures, including cash transfers and support initiatives, targeting families and vulnerable groups across Guyana before the end of this year.
Speaking on Wednesday, the Head of State said the forthcoming initiatives are part of a broader empowerment agenda aimed at improving the quality of life for every category of citizen — from the elderly and persons living with disabilities to farmers, small business owners, and children.
“I’m going to announce before the end of the year a series of measures, not only looking at cash grants but looking at the total empowerment of every Guyanese — whether you’re someone living with a disability, the elderly, children, small businesses, or farmers,” President Ali stated.
He emphasized that the new measures will be implemented in a structured and transparent manner, supported by the digitization of government systems. The President also urged citizens to open bank accounts, noting that his administration has been working with commercial banks to simplify and make the process more accessible.
“We want every Guyanese to own a bank account so that digital transfers can be easy, efficient, and transparent,” he explained, adding that online account openings are now possible with minimal documentation for balances under $1 million.
In addition to the cash transfer program, President Ali announced a $2.7 billion allocation to the rice industry, which will translate to $300 per bag, as part of ongoing efforts to boost agricultural productivity.
“We’re going to give $150,000 to every fisherfolk as an incentive — a subsidy from the government — to help them cushion rising costs and sustain their livelihoods,” the President added.
The upcoming measures are expected to form part of a broader national social support framework designed to enhance economic inclusion, digital access, and sectoral resilience across Guyana.
