GEORGETOWN, GUYANA โ€” As the vibrant colors of Phagwah (Holi) blanketed the nation today, President Dr. Irfaan Ali issued a stirring call for national renewal, urging Guyanese to look beyond labels of race, religion, and class to build a truly inclusive society.

In a national address, the Head of State characterized the “Festival of Colours” as a profound revelation of the human spirit, emphasizing that Guyanaโ€™s strength lies in its diversity rather than uniformity.

The Symbolism of Colour

The President used the traditional throwing of colored powder (abir) and liquids as a metaphor for the country’s multicultural fabric.

  • Diversity over Uniformity: He noted that the yellow, green, pink, and purple seen during the festivities are not “divisions” but proof that beauty lies in the “glorious, joyful mingling of differences.”
  • A Shared Identity: “Beneath the powder, beneath the skin… we are one,” the President stated, asserting that the significance of Holi is its universal invitation to belong, regardless of one’s personal beliefs.

A Vision for the Future

President Aliโ€™s message moved from celebration to a call for tangible social change, articulating a vision for a Guyana where merit and dreams supersede physical attributes.

  • Dismantling Bias: He called for a nation where the color of a child’s skin matters less than the “color of their dreams” and where the texture of one’s hair is not used as a measure of worth.
  • Transcending Class: The President emphasized that religion should be a path walked in peace and that social class should be viewed as a “circumstance that can be transcended” rather than a permanent “caste.”

Building the “One Guyana”

The Head of State urged citizens to carry the spirit of Phagwahโ€”the triumph of good over evilโ€”into their daily interactions to foster a more harmonious nation.

“Let us build a Guyana where the color of a child’s skin matters less than the color of their dreams… where the religion is a part they walk in peace and the class is not a case but a circumstance that can be transcended.” โ€” President Dr. Irfaan Ali

The celebrations today saw thousands of Guyanese from all backgrounds taking to the streets and community centers, embodying the Presidentโ€™s call for a shared sense of belonging.
