Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), Aubrey Norton, has accused the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Government of fostering a culture of lawlessness and corruption, asserting that the administration protects its supporters even when they violate the law.
Speaking during his party’s most recent press conference, Norton said the government’s actions send the wrong message to citizens, implying that political loyalty grants immunity from prosecution.
“You know what signal that sends to other persons in the PPP? Thief, forge, rob — once you are part of us, we will protect you,” Norton declared.
The PNCR leader referenced a case involving Kevin Lurma, a man from Linden who was convicted of fraud earlier this year. Norton alleged that despite being found guilty in absentia by Magistrate Rusha Liverpool on June 19, 2025, Lurma has not yet been handed over to the Guyana Prison Service to serve his sentence.
Court records show that Lurma was charged with obtaining $500,000 by false pretense between September and November 2024, by pretending he could secure a land title for a resident of McKenzie, Linden.
Norton stated that although the conviction was handed down months ago, Lurma remains under police supervision instead of being transferred to prison. Reports circulating on social media suggest that the convicted man has been moved between police stations and hospitals, yet never committed to serving his term.
The opposition leader described the situation as “deeply troubling” and indicative of selective justice, arguing that it reflects the PPP/C’s willingness to shield its supporters from legal consequences.
He further contended that such actions undermine public trust in Guyana’s justice system and fuel widespread perceptions of institutional corruption and political interference.
Norton reiterated the PNCR’s call for greater transparency, accountability, and enforcement of the rule of law across all sectors.
