Two senior government ministers have issued a sharp rebuke of the political opposition while defending the track record and development agenda of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), declaring that the PPP is the only serious political force capable of moving Guyana forward.
Speaking at the PPP’s campaign launch at the Kitty Market Square, Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Oneidge Walrond reflected on her entry into public life in 2020, noting that while she was never a politician, the PPP welcomed her not out of favour or personal connections, but because the party believes in inclusion.
“The PPP opened the door and invited me in… because the PPP/C believes in inclusion,” she said. “Governance must reflect our nation’s rich diversity, and everyone must be represented at the table.”
Minister Walrond said the development currently underway across the country is not happening by chance but is the result of “thoughtful planning, smart policies, and a government that listens.” She described the upcoming election as a clear choice between continued transformation and political regression.
“If you want to move Guyana forward, there is only one choice come September 1,” she said.Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water, Susan Rodrigues, took a more direct aim at the opposition, accusing them of playing games with the country’s future.
“We don’t have time for child’s play,” she said to loud applause. “They are playing dollyhouse with your future.” Rodrigues cited the PPP’s housing program as proof of real and measurable impact, stating that over 50,000 families have become landowners under the government’s initiatives.
“The PPP governs in a real way, that brings about real change and real positive impact,” she said. Both ministers argued that only the PPP has the leadership and capacity to manage Guyana’s development during a critical period of economic expansion.
“If you think you’ve seen growth and development, you ain’t see nothing yet,” Rodrigues said. Their comments reflect the PPP’s broader campaign strategy, which focuses on economic growth, inclusive governance, and casting the opposition as unserious and disconnected from national priorities.
With just weeks to go before Nomination Day, the party appears to be positioning itself as not just the incumbent, but the only credible option at the polls.
