The Ministry of Health’s newest investment in healthcare — the Enmore Regional Hospital — is already transforming lives along the East Coast of Demerara. Officially commissioned on July 4, 2025, the state-of-the-art facility is now providing specialized, high-quality healthcare to thousands of residents who previously had to travel long distances for such services.
Medical Superintendent Dr. Tracey Bovell explained that the hospital was designed with a patient-centered, evidence-based approach, employing highly skilled professionals and advanced technology to improve service delivery.
“The main goal is to bring healthcare closer to the community — closer to the people who need it most,” Dr. BOveLl emphasized.
In just three months of operation, the hospital has already made a significant impact, recording over 7,000 outpatient visits, nearly 5,000 emergency cases, and welcoming 85 newborns to its maternity ward.
The 24-hour emergency department and specialized outpatient clinics operate from Monday to Friday, ensuring that patients have access to comprehensive care. The facility is also fully equipped with radiology services, including ultrasound, X-ray, and CT scan capabilities, all of which are provided free of charge to citizens of Guyana.
Dr. Bovell also highlighted several innovations introduced at the hospital, such as a digital queuing and appointment system that connects patients directly to physicians, and an innovative nurse-call feature that enhances patient safety.
“Patients can simply press a button to call for assistance — even if they’re in the bathroom — and a nurse is alerted instantly,” she explained.
Since its launch, the Enmore Regional Hospital has not only improved access to critical healthcare services, but also enhanced the overall quality of care. Still, it has also boosted public confidence in the national healthcare system, serving as a model for future regional hospitals.
