POLICE REPORT OVER 2,300 TRAFFIC CASES IN JUST ONE WEEK

Georgetown, September 23, 2025 – The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has disclosed that more than 2,300 traffic cases were recorded in just one week, as authorities ramp up efforts to crack down on reckless driving and unsafe road practices.

According to the GPF Traffic Department, a total of 2,314 cases were registered between September 14–20, 2025. Of these, speeding once again topped the list with 252 offences. Other major violations included 196 tinted vehicle cases, 152 helmet breaches, 71 seatbelt violations, and 21 cases of driving under the influence (DUI).

Police also cited 49 drivers for operating vehicles without front lights, 64 for unlit rear vehicles, 58 for breaches of prescribed fitness conditions, and 8 for faulty packing.

While enforcement continues to be a priority, police say education remains just as important in reshaping attitudes towards road safety. Between September 15–19, officers delivered road safety lectures in 24 schools across 10 regions, reaching both primary and secondary students. Schools included New Diamond/Grove Primary, Leonora Primary, Providence Primary, St. Ignatius Secondary, Mabaruma Primary, and Port Kaituma Secondary, among others.

The outreach formed part of the GPF’s ongoing campaign stressing the importance of responsible driving, pedestrian awareness, use of helmets and seatbelts, and strict adherence to traffic laws.

Traffic officials maintain that road accidents remain one of the leading causes of serious injury and death in Guyana, most often linked to speeding, reckless driving, and impaired judgment. They assured that the combined approach of enforcement and education will continue as part of the wider national effort to reduce road fatalities and promote safer communities.
