A police investigation is underway following the fatal shooting of 35-year-old Police Lance Corporal Richard Marvin Hayes, who was shot dead by a licensed firearm holder on Thursday morning at Stelling Road, Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara.

The suspect has been identified as Robert Hoosein, a cellphone store proprietor at the stelling. Police confirmed that Hoosein has been arrested and his licensed .32 Taurus pistol seized.

Reports indicate that Hayes, who was attached to the Impact Base at Brickdam Police Station, had visited the store on Wednesday to inquire about purchasing a cellphone and returned the following morning to complete the transaction.

According to police, the businessman claimed that Hayes became aggressive and was asked to leave. It is alleged that Hayes then threw a cellphone heater gun at Hoosein, hitting him in the chest, prompting the businessman to fire a single shot, which struck the officer in the right side of his chest.

Upon hearing the gunshot, Ron Hayes, the victim’s brother and owner of a nearby barbershop, rushed to the scene and found the officer bleeding. Police later confirmed that one gunshot wound was visible on the right chest area.

The suspect remains in custody as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
