GEORGETOWN, GUYANA — As the world observes Women’s History Month, the local stage is being set to honor the backbone of Guyanese society. SSignal Productions is gearing up for the third edition of the Phenomenal Women Concert, a showcase of music, poetry, and dance dedicated to the strength and resilience of womanhood.
The event, which has quickly become a staple of the March cultural calendar, is scheduled to take place this Sunday evening, March 15, 2026, at the historic Umana Yana in Kingston.
A Positive Counter-Narrative
Speaking with Nightly News on Friday, renowned musician and producer Bonny Alves explained that the concert was born out of a desire to see women celebrated in a “positive light” amidst troubling headlines of domestic violence and social challenges.
- Inspiration: Alves noted that women are the “pillars” of the family and community.
- The Message: The production aims to send a clear signal of appreciation, affirming that women’s contributions are invaluable to the nation’s progress.
- Safe Space: By creating an uplifting and affirming environment, the concert serves as a cultural intervention against the brutalization often seen in the news.
“I See You”: Headliner Charmaine Blackman-Alves
The concert will be headlined by the “Queen of Guyana’s Music,” Charmaine Blackman-Alves, who brings over 36 years of performance experience to the stage.
- The Vision: Blackman-Alves emphasized that while women are often the primary drivers of the arts, they are frequently overshadowed. “We need to show that they are appreciated… we hear you, we see you, and we know that you are phenomenal,” she declared.
- Mentorship: Offering advice to the next generation of female artists, she stressed the importance of a positive circle, urging young women to keep “motivating factors” in their corner and avoid negativity.
A Star-Studded Lineup
The 2026 edition features a diverse array of talent, bridging the gap between veteran performers and contemporary voices:
| Artist | Discipline |
| Charmaine Blackman | Vocals / Headliner |
| Carlene Gill | Poetry & Spoken Word |
| Simone Dowding | Theatre & Acting |
