Parkside Steel Orchestra Brings the Sweet Sounds of Steel Pan to Summer 2025
By HGP Nightly News
GEORGETOWN, GUYANA – The Parkside Steel Orchestra is once again filling the air with the vibrant, melodic sounds of the steel pan this summer. The group’s annual Summer Steel Pan Program is now in full swing, welcoming both children and adults to learn and celebrate one of Guyana’s most treasured musical traditions.
Speaking with HGP Nightly News, Mr. Reginald Brown, a proud member of the orchestra, said the program was born out of a deep commitment to preserving the steel pan culture in Guyana and beyond.
“We know we have a responsibility to pass down knowledge to the next generation,” Brown said. “Our aim is to give both young people and adults an opportunity to explore music, rhythm, and performance.”
Classes for All Ages
The program is open to participants aged 8 and older, offering a unique opportunity for those who may have always wanted to play the steel pan but never had the chance. Two sessions are scheduled:
- Session 1: August 4 – 15
- Session 2: August 18 – 29
The registration fee is $15,000, and Miss Naomi Roberts, an experienced steel pan instructor, teaches students.
More Than Music
In addition to professional training, the classes aim to foster unity, community spirit, and cultural pride.
“The motivation comes when our core members see that ‘aha’ moment in students — when they finally perfect a piece we’ve been teaching,” Brown added. “It’s something they can be proud of beyond their academic studies.”
