OPPOSITION SEEKS DETAILS ON TOP SALARIES AT LANDS AND SURVEY COMMISSION

HGP Nightly News – APNU Member of Parliament Ganesh Mahipaul on Monday raised questions over budgetary allocations to the Guyana Lands and Survey Commission (GLSC) and the Guyana Technical Training College, as the National Assembly continued its examination of the 2026 Estimates.

During the review, Mahipaul focused on the $78 million earmarked for the Technical Training College, noting that a large portion of the allocation is set aside for consultancies, operational expenses, and rental accommodation for professors.

He also queried the decision to hire eight instructors whose salaries are to be paid through the Ministry of Finance, seeking clarity on the long-term sustainability and oversight of those arrangements. Mahipaul also turned his attention to the financial position of the GLSC, highlighting what he described as a concerning mismatch between expenditure and projected income.

He pointed to a wage bill of approximately $1 billion, compared with projected revenue of $956 million, and questioned how the commission intends to manage the shortfall.

In addition, the opposition MP pressed for details on the salaries and benefits of the highest-paid staff at the GLSC, arguing that Parliament has a responsibility to ensure transparency, efficiency and value for money in agencies entrusted with managing public resources.

The scrutiny formed part of the broader parliamentary review of Budget 2026, as lawmakers examined spending priorities and accountability across state agencies.
