Construction works have begun at the Beterverwagting (BV) Primary School to eliminate a persistent pigeon infestation that has disrupted learning and raised health concerns among teachers, parents, and students.
Construction is currently in progress at the BV Primary School to tackle the ongoing pigeon problem that has affected several classrooms.
The project—led by the Ministry of Education—focuses on sealing open spaces, repairing damaged roofs, and reinforcing vulnerable areas to prevent birds from nesting inside the school building.
President of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), Mr. Orfin McCertie, said the intervention is a “welcome development” that will greatly improve conditions for both students and teachers.
He expressed optimism that the repairs would finally bring an end to the long-standing issue.
“We do welcome the work that is going on at the school and we’re optimistic that based on the works, it would bring an end to the issue that we’ve been having for quite some time,” McCertie stated.
Workers are actively securing ceiling gaps and other access points while also carrying out cleaning and sanitation to ensure the school environment remains safe and hygienic once repairs are complete.
For safety reasons, only Grade Six students are currently attending in-person classes as they prepare for their upcoming examinations.
Meanwhile, Grades One through Five are engaged in remote learning, with worksheets distributed to ensure minimal disruption to studies.
This intervention follows the temporary suspension of classes five days ago, after teachers and parents threatened protest action over the worsening conditions.
