LINDEN, GUYANA – Aubrey Norton, presidential candidate for A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), has promised that under an APNU-led government, Linden will see significant development, continued electricity subsidies, and targeted investments in industries beyond bauxite.
Speaking over the weekend in his hometown of Linden, Region 10, Norton delivered an impassioned address to residents, pledging to work “assiduously” to ensure that the mining town benefits from cheap, reliable electricity and broader economic diversification.
“We want to see Linden progress. Linden has scope to develop other industries outside of bauxite. That’s a promise to you,” Norton said.
The APNU leader reaffirmed that, if elected, his administration would maintain the current electricity subsidy for Linden, countering fears that it might be removed if the town is connected to the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) main grid — known as the Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System.
Norton also criticized the governing People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), accusing them of deliberately underdeveloping the town over the last five years. He claimed that PPP/C policies have ignored opportunities to expand agriculture in Linden and cited the defunding of the Linden Enterprise Network as a clear example.
“When they come to tell you nonsense, ask them if they like Linden so much, why didn’t they put a board at LEN so the money could be distributed?” Norton told the crowd.
In outlining his development vision, Norton pledged:
- Rent and mortgage assistance for Lindeners
- A school transformation program nationwide
- Support for agriculture in Linden
- Infrastructure and social services improvements to raise the standard of living
Norton urged residents to be wary of the PPP/C’s promises, framing the upcoming general and regional elections as a pivotal moment for Linden’s future.
