NORTON CALLS FOR COMMANDER MANDALL TO BE CHARGED FOR INCITING “PUBLIC MISCHIEF”

Opposition Leader Calls for Charges Against Former Region 3 Commander Over Misinformation in Adriana Younge Case

GEORGETOWN, GUYANA — Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton is calling for criminal charges to be laid against former Region 3 Police Commander Khali Mandal, whom he accuses of deliberately disseminating false information in the case of 11-year-old Adriana Younge, whose tragic death has sparked nationwide protests and calls for justice.

Speaking to reporters, Norton said that Mandal should be charged with “public mischief” and accused the Guyana Police Force (GPF) of selectively enforcing justice.

“If we are to deal with all in a fair way, then Mandal should be charged,” Norton declared.

The GPF announced on April 26, 2025, that Mandal had been sent on leave to facilitate the ongoing investigation into Adriana’s death. However, pressure continues to mount over the police’s overall handling of the matter, which has seen widespread public backlash, including road blockades, protests, and intense scrutiny over official communication.

According to sources, Mandal was responsible for disseminating false information claiming that Adriana Younge left the Double Day Hotel in a red and black romper—a claim later retracted and traced back to the former commander.

Norton posited that if Tiana Serena Lewis-King, a nursing assistant currently wanted for falsely claiming she attended the post-mortem on the Health Minister’s behalf, is being pursued for public mischief, Mandal must be held to the same standard.

“I hold no brief for Tiana Lewis-King,” Norton said. “But if she is to be charged, then Mandal should be charged too, because both committed similar acts—deliberately misleading the public and obstructing justice.”

The calls for accountability come amid heightened tensions in the country. Adriana’s case continues to shake public trust in the justice system and fuel national demands for transparency, truth, and equal treatment under the law.
