HGP NIGHTLY NEWS – No charges have yet been announced against Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed and two other men following Monday night’s gunfire near the Kitty residence of Senior Superintendent Prem Narine, even as the Government says the trio remains in police custody.
In a statement on the incident, the Government alleged that Mohamed and his companions were travelling in a dark-coloured, heavily tinted vehicle and filming Narine’s Barr Street residence shortly before midnight.
The administration claims shots were fired from the vehicle, prompting Narine to return fire with his service weapon. Police subsequently pursued and intercepted the vehicle and allegedly recovered an unlicensed firearm.
Spent shells were also reportedly recovered near Narine’s residence. The Government’s statement, however, did not identify any criminal charges filed against Mohamed or the other two men.
It also did not include their account of the confrontation. Mohamed has separately disputed the official version of events, including the circumstances surrounding the gunfire and the firearm police say was recovered.
The incident has attracted additional attention because Narine is a witness in the ongoing extradition proceedings involving Mohamed and his father, Nazar Mohamed.
The Government says the United States Department of Justice is being kept informed as investigations continue.
The competing accounts surrounding the shooting remain under investigation, and the allegations have not been determined by a court.
