US JUSTICE DEPARTMENT BEING UPDATED ON KITTY SHOOTING INVOLVING MOHAMED

HGP NIGHTLY NEWS – Monday night’s shooting involving Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed has now drawn the attention of United States authorities, with the Government of Guyana confirming that the US Department of Justice is being kept informed of developments.

The Government says the incident carries implications beyond Guyana because Senior Superintendent Prem Narine, outside whose Kitty residence the gunfire occurred, is a key witness in the ongoing extradition proceedings involving Mohamed and his father, Nazar Mohamed.

In a statement, the administration said several serious criminal offences could potentially arise from the incident and argued that the circumstances have implications for the criminal justice systems of both Guyana and the United States.

According to the Government’s account, Mohamed and two other men were allegedly filming Narine’s residence from a heavily tinted vehicle when shots were fired from the car.

Narine reportedly returned fire before the vehicle was later intercepted. Police have said an unlicensed firearm was subsequently found inside the vehicle and the three occupants were arrested.

Mohamed and his companions have disputed the police account of the shooting, including who fired first. Mohamed has also denied knowledge of the firearm reportedly recovered from the vehicle.

The Government noted that Narine is currently giving evidence in the extradition proceedings and had previously expressed concerns about his safety and that of his family.

The administration also raised concerns about possible interference with witnesses and referenced other serious allegations against Mohamed. Those allegations have not been established as fact before a court.

The Government says the State has an obligation to protect witnesses and preserve the integrity of judicial proceedings, while insisting that the law will be applied to the circumstances surrounding Monday night’s incident.

Investigations remain ongoing.
