Attorney-at-Law Nigel Hughes Resigns as Leader of AFC

Attorney-at-Law Nigel Hughes has stepped down as Leader of the Alliance For Change (AFC), just weeks after the party managed to secure only 3,067 votes in the recently concluded 2025 Regional and General Elections.
In his resignation letter, seen by Nightly News, Hughes described it as a privilege to have been elected leader but admitted that the party’s results were “beyond disappointing.” He accepted full responsibility for the outcome, stating:
“I believe the party has a great role to play in the development of this great country of ours and I wish the Chair and Executive my best wishes and support on its forward trajectory.”
Hughes also expressed gratitude to the AFC for the opportunity to lead during what he described as a difficult period.
Following his decision, the party’s General Secretary issued a release confirming receipt of his resignation. The statement noted that the National Executive Committee (NEC) will meet in an emergency session to consider the ramifications and consequences of Hughes’ departure, while also encouraging him to reconsider.
The release added that should Hughes remain firm in his decision, the party’s constitutional provisions will guide the way forward. Ironically, the NEC had only days earlier expressed fresh confidence in Hughes’ leadership.
