NEARLY 1,000 TICKETS ISSUED IN ONE WEEK AS FORCE FIGHTS ROAD CARNAGE

GEORGETOWN – The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has launched an all-out blitz on reckless driving, issuing a stunning total of 987 traffic-related offenses in just one week as part of its desperate, national effort to curb road carnage. This aggressive enforcement campaign comes at a crucial moment when the Force is battling recent criticisms of misconduct and the shadow cast by “rogue elements” within its own ranks.

The latest enforcement report, covering September 28 to October 4, 2025, reveals that drivers and riders continue to flout basic safety laws despite the heightened police presence. The three most common breaches exposed the nation’s disregard for personal safety and regulation: failure to wear safety helmets topped the list with 210 cases, followed by illegal tinted motor vehicles (190), and reckless speeding (178).

In total, a massive 2,392 cases were processed during the week, reflecting the GPF’s commitment to stepping up visible road policing on major corridors and in key communities, including the Soesdyke-Linden Highway, Bartica, and Mahdia.

The dual strategy is designed to rebuild trust from the asphalt up. By being highly visible and actively enforcing the law, the GPF aims to demonstrate accountability, a critical element missing in its recent controversies. Beyond ticketing offenders, the Traffic Department continues a robust educational campaign, holding dozens of lectures for drivers, bar patrons, and even extending to major agencies like Trans Guyana Airways and Guyana Water Inc. The Force also visited 10 schools across six regions to instill foundational road safety habits in young children.

A senior traffic official noted that this combined strategy of strict enforcement alongside sustained public education is vital to the Force’s long-term Social Crime Prevention and Road Safety Strategy. While acknowledging a “positive shift in compliance in some regions,” the official stressed that consistent public co-operation remains essential. The GPF is urging all road users to exercise caution and adhere to the laws, effectively making citizens responsible for helping the Force clean up both the roadways and its tarnished reputation.
