Former APNU Candidate Urges Leadership Change, Calls for GECOM Chair’s Resignation

With the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) confirming that the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) secured 36 seats in the 65-member National Assembly — returning President Irfaan Ali for a second term — former APNU candidate and ex-Mayor Ubhrat Narine says his party must urgently reform.
Narine admitted that APNU did not expect this outcome and argued that new leadership and youth voices must take the forefront, while senior members should play advisory roles.
“I believe new leadership is needed for the party, and I believe that young people must be placed in front while the seniors must guide us from behind,” Narine stated.
He also criticized the party’s disconnect with its supporters, stressing that APNU must rebuild from the grassroots level.
“When you have leaders with ego and pride who cannot come down to the people and what the people want, this is the result we get.”
Narine went further, alleging that the GECOM chair was compromised during both the 2020 and 2025 elections, and publicly called for her resignation, citing concerns over a “bloated voters’ list.”
Meanwhile, the final results showed the PPPC with 36 seats, the WIN Party securing 16 seats as the main opposition, and APNU with 12 seats.
