MULTIPURPOSE FACILITY EARMARKED FOR EAST RUIMVELDT – MAYOR MENTORE

GEORGETOWN, GUYANA — The Georgetown Mayor and City Council (M&CC) are moving forward with a major restoration project in East Ruimveldt, following the destruction of several key community buildings by fire. Mayor Alfred Mentore has officially announced plans for a modern, multipurpose facility to be constructed near the community’s center ground, designed to serve as both a social hub and an economic incubator for local residents.

The site previously housed a daycare center and a storage building, both of which were gutted by a severe blaze in May 2025.

Turning Ashes into Assets

The project is being funded through a combination of insurance settlements and the M&CC’s 2026 capital budget. Mayor Mentore highlighted that the Council decided to “add additional monies” to ensure the new building exceeds the capacity of the structures it replaces.

  • Design Status: Architectural designs and quantity assessments have been finalized.
  • Selection Process: The municipal authorities have already initiated a pre-qualification process for contractors, with the contract award expected shortly.

A Multipurpose Vision: Social & Vocational

The proposed facility is intended to be a “vibrant hub” that balances leisure with skill development. The design includes:

  • Social Pavilion: A dedicated pavilion featuring a banquet hall to host weddings, birthday parties, and community social events.
  • Entrepreneurial Spaces: Integrated commercial units for barbershops and beauty salons, providing local entrepreneurs with professional spaces to ply their trade.
  • Vocational Training: Dedicated classrooms for skill-building, specifically mentioning sewing and tailoring classes to empower residents through job training.

“We’ve decided that we’re going to add some additional monies from our budget towards that building itself and we have come up with a design as to what that building will be.”Mayor Alfred Mentore

Synergy with National Upgrades

This announcement coincides with a broader push for the “rapid transformation” of East Ruimveldt. Just this week, central government ministers returned to the community following a visit from President Irfaan Ali to outline complementary projects, including:

  1. Recreational Upgrades: Improvements to the football ground, basketball court, and the addition of a walking track.
  2. Infrastructure: Detailed assessments for concrete drainage and improved sanitation services.
  3. Market Rehabilitation: Separate funding has been allocated for the rehabilitation of the East Ruimveldt Market, which is recognized as a vital economic pillar for the area.

Conclusion: Restoring the Heart of the Community

For the residents of East Ruimveldt, the loss of the daycare and community center left a significant void in local services. By integrating commercial and vocational training spaces into the new design, Mayor Mentore and the M&CC are aiming to provide more than just a replacement building—they are building a platform for long-term community growth.
