Authorities are probing a major security breach at the Ministry of Home Affairs after an intruder unlawfully entered the Brickdam building early Monday morning, ransacking a key office before fleeing the scene.
According to an official statement, the incident occurred around 4:00 a.m. on December 8, 2025, when security personnel monitoring CCTV cameras spotted a man wearing a hoodie inside the Immigration Support Services Department on the building’s middle floor. The intruder was seen carrying a large haversack as he moved through the office.
A security rank stationed in the southwestern guard hut immediately raised an alarm. Although officers pursued the suspect, he managed to escape.
Preliminary investigations by the Guyana Police Force revealed that the intruder gained access through a washroom window on the eastern side of the building. The window was found open, with no signs of forced entry. CCTV footage shows the individual entering through the window, rummaging within the middle flat while carrying a black, bulky travel bag, then exiting via a northern fire escape before scaling the eastern fence and heading east along Crew Street.
The Ministry confirmed that police have since apprehended a person of interest believed to be the intruder. A quantity of items suspected to have been stolen from the Ministry was recovered in his possession.
The Ministry of Home Affairs commended both the vigilance of the security personnel and the swift response of the police. Investigations remain ongoing.
This latest breach follows a similar incident at the construction site of the new CANU headquarters, raising broader concerns about public security even as the Guyana Police Force recently announced a decline in serious crime and a reported 61% crime-clearance rate.
