MINISTRY OF HEALTH WITH SUPPORT FORM MOUNT SINAI LAUNCH PROGRAM ECHO, ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY COMMUNITIES TO BENEFIT

GEORGETOWN, GUYANA — The Ministry of Health, in partnership with the Mount Sinai Health System, officially launched Project ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) on Tuesday, March 24, 2026. This “telementoring” model is being hailed as the “software” upgrade needed to keep pace with Guyana’s rapid hospital construction, connecting specialists in the city with local clinicians in the most remote corners of the country.

The launch, held at the Ministry’s boardroom, signals a shift toward a decentralized, peer-to-peer learning network that will eventually serve 150 communities across all ten administrative regions.

The “Hub-and-Spoke” Model: Moving Knowledge, Not Patients

Project ECHO is not a traditional “telemedicine” consultation where a doctor sees a patient over video. Instead, it is a collaborative medical education model that empowers local healthcare providers.

  • Telementoring: Specialists at a central “Hub” (like Georgetown Public Hospital or Mount Sinai) mentor local clinicians at “Spokes” (health centers in the hinterland).
  • Case-Based Learning: Rather than just listening to lectures, local nurses and doctors present real-life complex cases to a panel of experts to receive guidance on treatment and best practices.
  • Initial Focus: The program’s first phase will focus specifically on chronic diseases, such as diabetes and hypertension, which require long-term, specialized management.

Upgrading “Human Software”

Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony emphasized that new buildings alone do not save lives; the knowledge of the people inside them is the true driver of healthcare quality.

“If we only do infrastructural transformation without putting in the software, then it would not work as we would like it to work… One of the fastest ways of upgrading people’s knowledge is to ensure peer-to-peer interaction. You might have a case in a remote part of Guyana and be uncertain; here you have a whole network of people who can support you.”Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony

Cost-Effective Capacity Building

Project ECHO is being lauded as a high-impact, low-cost solution for a country like Guyana, given its geography.

  • Reducing Travel: It eliminates the need for expensive and time-consuming in-person training sessions that often take healthcare workers away from their communities for weeks at a time.
  • Empowering Underserved Areas: By creating “local experts” in the hinterland, the program reduces the need for patients to travel to Georgetown for specialized care, as their local doctors now have direct access to global specialists.
  • Telemedicine Synergy: The platform will complement the existing Telemedicine Initiative, which is currently being rolled out to 150 communities, providing a multi-layered digital health net for the nation.

A Sustainable Network of Expertise

By building local networks of expertise, the Ministry of Health and Mount Sinai are ensuring that the “brain power” of the Guyanese medical fraternity is distributed as widely as the nation’s new physical infrastructure. Project ECHO represents a futuristic step toward a one-tier healthcare system where your location no longer dictates the quality of the specialist advice you receive.
