GEORGETOWN, GUYANA – As part of International Nurses Week 2025, the Ministry of Health hosted a special research forum on Friday spotlighting nurses and midwives’ vital role in scientific research to improve patient care and strengthen the national health system.

Delivering the feature address, Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony emphasized the government’s ongoing efforts to transform Guyana’s health sector, noting that research is key to driving innovation and better outcomes in healthcare.

“There are lots of things that can be done in the area of research, and there will be many more happening,” Dr. Anthony said.

He also underscored the importance of scientific rigor, explaining that research must be appropriately validated and conducted accurately to have a meaningful impact.

“When we do research, we want those findings to withstand scientific rigor — and the only way that can happen is if it’s done the right way,” he noted.

The Minister revealed that the Ministry is collaborating with several regional and international partners to educate and empower nurses on the core principles of healthcare research.

Continued Education Mandatory for Nursing Licensure

Dr. Anthony also stressed that continuing nursing education (CNE) is now mandatory for nurses and midwives seeking to renew their professional licenses:

“If you are not going to do your continuing nursing education, then you will have difficulty getting your license,” he warned.

Recognition for Excellence

During the ceremony, several nurses and midwives were awarded for their outstanding contributions to healthcare research in their respective areas, reinforcing the Ministry’s commitment to cultivating a culture of evidence-based practice.

This forum marks a significant milestone in aligning Guyana’s nursing profession with global medical research, education, and practice standards.
