Ministry of Health Expands Access to Healthcare Training Programmes

The Ministry of Health’s Health Sciences Education Division has expanded two major training programmes to ensure applicants from all ten administrative regions are eligible.
Initially, a promotional flyer for the Rehabilitation Assistant Training Programme excluded applicants from Regions 7 and 10 — sparking frustration from residents and leaders. Region 10 has long pushed for greater access to healthcare resources, while Region 7’s remote communities struggle to access specialized medical services.
Following the backlash, the Ministry quickly revised and reissued the notice, confirming that both the Rehabilitation Assistant Training Programme and the Audiological Practitioner Training Programme are now open to all Guyanese aged 18–40.
The Rehabilitation Assistant Training Programme runs for one year and will train participants to support physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and other professionals in patient recovery. Graduates must commit to three years of service in the public health system.
The Audiological Practitioner Training Programme, also one year, focuses on diagnosing and managing hearing and balance disorders — a healthcare area in need of more local specialists.
Applicants must have at least four CSEC or CXC subjects (Grades 1–3), though equivalent qualifications such as GED, SCQF, or Bachelor’s Foundation Programme are also accepted.
The Ministry is urging young people from across Guyana — including hinterland regions — to apply before the September 20 deadline.
