CID Probes Multi-Million Dollar Theft at GECOM

The theft of millions of dollars belonging to the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has triggered a full-scale investigation by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
According to information reaching Nightly News, several staff members — mainly from GECOM’s accounts department — were taken to CID headquarters for questioning.
Reliable sources confirmed that on Monday, the accounts department received approximately $969 million intended for payment of staff who worked during the recently concluded elections. By Thursday, however, millions of dollars were reported missing.
Police were subsequently informed, and several individuals were detained as part of the probe.
Meanwhile, a usually reliable source familiar with the investigation suggested that some of those being questioned may have little to no knowledge of the theft. The source further noted that staff responsible for salary payments have been handling large amounts of cash for years without incident.
The insider pointed to possible improper hiring practices since 2021 as a potential contributing factor to the breach.
Neither the Guyana Police Force nor GECOM has issued an official statement on the matter.
