MICRO AND WOMEN ENTREPRENEUR LEARNING CENTER COMMISSIONED, TO TARGET MICRO AND MEDIUM SIZED ENTERPRISES

The Micro and Women Entrepreneur Learning Centre has officially been commissioned with the goal of strengthening Guyana’s micro- and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) — which account for nearly 75% of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s (GCCI) membership.

Conceptualized by the GCCI in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and the Government of Canada, the initiative focuses on advancing sustainable development and capacity-building within the agriculture and business sectors.

A Bold Step for Small Business Empowerment

President of the GCCI, Katy Smith, described the centre as “a bold idea aimed at helping micro and medium-led businesses and farmers thrive sustainably.”

She emphasized that the new facility will allow entrepreneurs — especially women and farmers — to access essential training, mentorship, and information resources.

“Any woman, entrepreneur, or farmer can walk up these stairs and access their portfolio of services and support,” Smith stated.

Strengthening Collaboration and Sustainable Growth

Donald Cole, Country Coordinator for the Sustainable Agriculture in the Caribbean Project (WUSC), highlighted the centre’s role in providing practical tools, tailored mentoring, and hands-on business training.

“It offers training in business fundamentals, digital tools, food security, food safety, quality, and sustainable production,” Cole explained.

He also noted that the centre will serve as a hub where businesses can test and showcase products, meet buyers, and connect with service providers.

Adam Loyer, Head of Cooperation at the High Commission of Canada, said the initiative stands as a testament to the shared commitment of partners to invest in the future of Guyanese entrepreneurship and agriculture.

“The center is the GCCI’s investment in the future of Guyana’s entrepreneurs,” he affirmed.

A Beacon of Innovation and Empowerment

Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha praised the project as a “beacon of empowerment and innovation,” underscoring its importance in Guyana’s agricultural transformation agenda.

“These projects are not just statistics; they represent real lives and livelihoods being transformed through innovation, opportunities, and empowerment,” the Minister said.

The new centre is expected to provide a structured pathway for micro and women-owned enterprises to scale up operations, improve competitiveness, and contribute meaningfully to Guyana’s rapidly diversifying economy.
