Plans are moving full speed ahead for the construction of a state-of-the-art oncology center in Guyana — a transformational project that the government says will redefine cancer diagnosis and treatment locally and across the Caribbean.

Speaking at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation’s (GPHC)Look Good, Feel Better” event in observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony said the new center will provide comprehensive cancer care, including early diagnosis, chemotherapy, and advanced treatment options.

“We just can’t talk about early diagnosis making a difference; we have to ensure that we are actually doing early diagnosis,” Dr. Anthony said, emphasizing that awareness must be matched with accessible, high-quality care.

The minister revealed that government is collaborating with international partners on detailed plans for the facility, which will include diagnostic labs, chemotherapy units, and some of the most advanced treatment technologies available.

“What we want when we build this center is to see it operating not just for Guyana, but offering treatment for many persons across the Caribbean,” he added.

Meanwhile, GPHC CEO Robbie Rambarran acknowledged current challenges facing the hospital’s Oncology Department, including limited space for patients, but assured that upgrades and expansions are underway.

“Our demand for care has exceeded our capacity, and that’s why we had to put an alternative waiting area outside,” Rambarran explained, noting that GPHC is investing hundreds of millions annually in oncology medication and care.

Breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women in Guyana, followed by cervical cancer, while prostate cancer continues to lead among men.

The proposed modern oncology center is being positioned as a regional hub for cancer care, research, and innovation — part of the government’s broader commitment to strengthening Guyana’s healthcare system and reducing the burden of cancer across the Caribbean.
