Guyana Hosts Regional Journalism Workshop on Energy and Climate Reporting

Georgetown, Guyana – Journalists from across Guyana are this weekend being equipped with essential skills to strengthen coverage of global energy and climate issues through a three-day workshop organized by the Institute of the Americas, a California-based think tank focused on sustainability and geopolitics.

Themed “Geopolitics of Energy and Climate Change in Latin America,” the training aims to promote best practices in journalism and deliver standardized, high-quality content across political, environmental, and energy sectors.

Jeremy Martin, Vice President for Energy and Sustainability at the Institute, told HGPTV Nightly News that the workshop is designed to help reporters explore major themes impacting the global and regional energy landscape.

“We’re trying to dive deep into issues around the energy sector and explain key topics at international, regional, and local levels. We’re thrilled to bring this initiative to Guyana for the first time,” Martin said.

Held at Cara Lodge in Georgetown, the event features seasoned instructors, including Betsy Fischer Martin, a former journalist and current Executive Director of the Women and Politics Institute. She brings decades of expertise in political and governance reporting.

“My role here is to work with journalists—both in group settings and one-on-one—to improve writing, reporting, and build trust with audiences,” Fischer Martin explained.

She emphasized the importance of continuing education for media professionals, particularly in emerging democracies and developing economies, where independent journalism plays a crucial role in public engagement and accountability.

“Around the world, journalists need to do more to earn and maintain the trust of their viewers and readers,” she added.

The workshop highlights the growing international interest in Guyana’s energy future, particularly as it positions itself as a key player in the oil and gas sector, while navigating the challenges of climate responsibility.
