LINDEN MAYOR URGES URGENT SUPPORT FOR WEST WATOOKA FLOOD VICTIMS

HGP Nightly News – Linden Mayor Dominique Blair is urging the central government and relevant state agencies to move quickly with support for residents of the West Watooka squatting area, warning that while floodwaters have receded, many families are still dealing with heavy losses.

Blair said the flooding hit small farmers especially hard, with reports of livestock losses and destroyed cash crops that have disrupted livelihoods and raised concerns about household food security. “While the floodwaters have gone down, the hardship remains,” the Mayor said, stressing that affected families need timely help to get back on their feet.He acknowledged that some immediate relief has already started.

According to Blair, cleaning supplies were distributed through the Civil Defence Commission (CDC), while protective gear was provided through the Office of the Mayor to support clean-up efforts in the community.

But Blair said recovery will stall unless aid now shifts from basic clean-up to agricultural restart support, including seeds, fertilisers and other key farming inputs. He noted that many residents depend directly on farming and small-scale production, and without targeted assistance, the losses could linger for months.

The Mayor reaffirmed that the Linden Municipality is prepared to work with national authorities and partners to ensure the West Watooka community receives the support needed as recovery continues.
