Subryanville Residents Protest Prefab Construction on Farnum Ground

Residents of Subryanville are voicing strong objections to the decision by the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown (M&CC) to grant permission for the construction of prefabricated school buildings on the Farnum community ground — a space long used for recreation and community activities.
In a statement on Tuesday, residents revealed that they had met with the mayor, city councillors, and David Sugrim, owner of May’s School, along with his attorney, to discuss the ongoing works. At that meeting, held on September 9, 2025, it was reportedly admitted that no formal application had been filed for the prefab construction.
Despite this, residents say the M&CC has refused to halt the works, which they describe as “an attempt to legalize an illegality.”
According to the community, construction has already begun on more than eight prime lots on the Farnum playing field, with the likelihood of additional land being taken over in the coming days.
May’s School, which previously occupied two house lots on Third Avenue, is rebuilding after a fire. Mayor Alfred Mentor confirmed that the council granted Sugrim temporary permission to use Farnum ground from March 2025 until December 2026. However, residents argue that this was done without due process and outside of proper legal channels.
The residents have also pressed the M&CC for transparency regarding the ownership of both the school and the land it previously occupied, saying this would help ease concerns of land grabbing. To date, they claim, their questions remain unanswered.
