JAGDEO DISMISSES EU OBSERVER CONCERNS ON JUST CONCLUDED ELECTIONS

One day after the European Union Election Observation Mission concluded that Guyana’s General and Regional Elections were peaceful and orderly, Chief Observer Robert Biedron pointed to unequal campaign conditions, largely due to the ruling party’s incumbency advantage.

The EU report noted that public projects such as hospitals, schools, roads, and bridges were inaugurated in parallel with campaign activities, while state media and government social channels amplified ruling party messages.

But PPP/C General Secretary Bharrat Jagdeo pushed back at a press conference on Thursday, dismissing many observer recommendations as impractical.

“You come into these countries and recommend things that don’t work anywhere else in the world. For me, they mean very little.”

Jagdeo argued that the government’s development projects should not be paused during an election period, insisting that delivering on promises—even up to Election Day—is part of governing.

Meanwhile, the EU mission, which the Ali-led administration invited, concluded that although the polls were peaceful, inclusive, and efficiently organized, key challenges remain: political polarization, incumbency influence, weak campaign finance rules, and a partisan media environment.

Biedron stressed that addressing these issues is vital to restoring public trust in the electoral process.
