“I DON’T ENCOURAGE IT” — MOTHER BREAKS HER SILENCE AFTER 13-YEAR-OLD SHOT IN ALLEGED BRICKDAM ROBBERY ATTEMPT

HGP Nightly News – The mother of a 13-year-old boy now lying in a hospital bed with a gunshot wound has spoken out publicly, after police said her son was shot during an alleged attempted robbery in broad daylight outside the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Brickdam. Police claim the teen and another male targeted an 81-year-old pensioner who was walking with his 79-year-old brother as the elderly men went to conduct official business on Wednesday morning. Investigators say one of the two suspects was armed with a knife and allegedly tried to snatch a haversack being carried by the pensioner.

The pensioner reportedly raised an alarm, drawing the attention of members of the public. In the middle of the chaos, police said a 25-year-old licensed firearm holder who was in the vicinity intervened and discharged his weapon in the direction of the suspects, striking the teenager as he attempted to flee. Now, with her son under police guard at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, the mother, whose identity is being protected because the boy is a minor, said she refuses to accept the public narrative that her household breeds crime, even while admitting her son must face the full weight of the law if the allegations are proven.

“I is mother and I don’t encourage it with my son,” she said, visibly shaken but firm. “I spoke to him many times… and if it so be the case, he have to face the consequence.” But her message did not stop at accountability. The woman alleged she saw the warning signs before, and claimed she tried to get help from authorities but was turned away because of her son’s age.

“I did try the system and it didn’t work. I go Welfare and they saying how he is 13, he under age, they can’t do nothing. They say if he was 14, then they could have done something. They said this is the law,” she alleged. Even as she acknowledged the seriousness of what police are investigating, she questioned the level of force used during the incident, arguing that law enforcement would not have responded in the same way.

“If it was a police, police don’t shoot like that,” she said. “If they do shoot, they shooting [in the] air. I need some [justice].”Police have said the boy remains hospitalised and is being treated for a gunshot wound. His condition has been described as stable. The second suspect, according to investigators, escaped the scene on a bicycle and remains at large.

The licensed firearm holder has been cooperating with the investigation, and police confirmed his weapon has been lodged as part of the probe. Investigators are also reviewing CCTV footage from the area, including nearby businesses, as they work to establish the precise sequence of events and determine what happened in those tense moments outside the cathedral.
