Child Protection Is Everyone’s Responsibility

As part of Child Protection Week, Minister of Human Services and Social Security Dr. Vindhya Persaud issued a powerful message, stressing that too many children in Guyana face abuse, neglect, bullying, and even violence—sometimes in the very spaces where they should feel safest.
Dr. Persaud emphasized that these realities cannot be ignored, noting that the government is working to strengthen protections and expand support systems for children nationwide.
Beyond Laws and Policies
“Protecting children is not just about laws and policies—it’s about each of us stepping up to notice, to listen, and to act when a child is in need,” the minister stated.
She pointed to several initiatives:
Parenting programs are designed to give families the tools to raise children with love, patience, and understanding.
Expansion of juvenile and teen support programs across more regions, ensuring struggling youth have safe spaces to turn to.
Training of volunteers for the Child Advocacy Network, a nationwide campaign aimed at bolstering child protection efforts.
Call to Action
Dr. Persaud urged all Guyanese to recognize that keeping children safe is a shared responsibility:
“Children don’t need violence to learn. They need guidance, respect, and encouragement.”
She called on individuals, families, and communities to speak up against abuse, offer a helping hand, and create safe environments where every child feels loved and secure.
