DIAMOND, E.B.D. – The tranquil community of Enmore, East Coast Demerara, has been rocked by the arrest of two individuals, including the victim’s own relative, who were today charged with plotting a shocking murder-for-hire scheme. Police allege the pair conspired to commit the murder of 44-year-old Bhagmattie Jagatram, known locally as ‘Shabana’.
The accused are 38-year-old housewife Anita Varsha Chetram of Enmore, and 30-year-old taxi driver Akeem Orin Bristol (called ‘Biggs’) of Craig Old Road, East Bank Demerara.
Authorities say the conspiracy to murder Jagatram took place over a period of nearly a month, between September 1st and September 24th, 2025, at the remote location of Yarrowkabra, Soesdyke Highway. While the official document names the charge as Conspiracy to Commit Murder, sources suggest the investigation focuses on a cold-blooded plot to hire a killer.
The timeline shows Chetram was the first to be detained, arrested by an officer from the Enmore Police Station on September 26th, 2025. Bristol was picked up the following day, September 27th, by police from the Providence Station.
The pair were brought before Magistrate Tameika Clarke at the Diamond Magistrate’s Court today, September 30th, 2025, at approximately 2:30 PM. The grave charge was read to them, but as is customary for such serious indictments, they were not required to enter a plea.
In a decisive move by the court, both Chetram and Bristol were remanded to prison. They are now scheduled to return to court for their next hearing on November 7th, 2025.
The community waits in stunned silence as investigators continue to piece together the motive behind what appears to be a deeply personal and treacherous plot against Bhagmattie Jagatram.
