HGP Nightly News – The Government opened the Hosororo Secondary School in Mabaruma today with public celebration, but Opposition MP Sherod Duncan is challenging the rollout, claiming the facility is being brought into use before key works are finished.
In a statement citing concerns raised by teachers and parents in Region One, Duncan said staff members were instructed to begin preparing classrooms even as furniture was still being assembled on site. Photographs shared publicly show desks and chairs being put together at the school, feeding anxiety among some families that the opening is being rushed.
One teacher, quoted in the statement, said workers may be able to ready a section in time, but warned there is still “a lot of work to get done.” Duncan’s statement also said some parents are uneasy about sending children into a facility they believe is not fully ready, with concerns centred on safety, dormitory preparedness, and whether the school can function properly from day one.
According to the statement, some parents have discussed keeping children at home until the school is completed.Duncan pointed to his own site visit earlier this month, saying what he observed matched those worries.
While he acknowledged that some classroom blocks appeared complete on the outside, he claimed internal works were still ongoing and several critical components remained unfinished, including student dormitories, teachers’ quarters, drainage finishes, and other external works.
The MP argued that opening the school in phases under pressure risks undermining the hinterland secondary education model the project was meant to support. He said teachers and students should not be expected to operate in a facility that, in his view, is being commissioned for optics rather than readiness.
