Newly appointed Minister of Home Affairs, Unage Walrond, has pledged decisive action against domestic crime and the proliferation of illegal firearms, underscoring the government’s commitment to citizen safety.

During a site visit in the capital on Wednesday, Minister Walrond noted that while serious crime has declined by 26%, domestic violence-related offenses remain a pressing concern.

“One person being killed in a domestic crime or being seriously injured is still too much,” she emphasized.

The minister also highlighted ongoing operations by the Guyana Police Force and other agencies to remove illicit firearms from the streets. However, she pointed out that systemic reforms are required to strengthen accountability in gun ownership.

As part of her agenda, Minister Walrond announced plans to introduce digital systems for firearm licensing, ensuring decisions are based on clear, objective criteria rather than personal discretion.

“We’re going to be setting some criteria that removes human bias. Licensing should be based on merit, not influence,” she explained, confirming that the Firearm Licensing Board will be renewed under her tenure.

Minister Walrond said these steps are critical to ensuring transparency, fairness, and safety in Guyana’s crime prevention framework.
