U-15 Girls National Secondary Schools Football Championship Heats Up
Football action resumed in the Blue Waters Shipping U-15 Girls National Secondary Schools Championship over the weekend with three exciting fixtures in Linden.
Christiansburg Wismar Secondary edged Mackenzie High 2–1 in a tightly contested opener, with Ronessa Stellingburg and Natalyeh Huntley scoring for the winners, while Tenisha David netted for Mackenzie.
Mackenzie High bounced back in their second outing, defeating Dora Secondary 1–0 thanks to a goal from Shania Gray. The final matchup saw Christiansburg Wismar Secondary and Dora Secondary battle to a 1–1 draw, with Akalia George scoring for Dora.
The Final Four — President’s College, Annai Secondary, Bush Lot Secondary, and Christiansburg Wismar Secondary — have now secured their spots, with the final rounds set for October 18 (Essequibo) and October 19 (Providence).
Guyana to Host FIBA Women’s Caribbean Championship
Guyana will tip off its quest for regional basketball glory when the FIBA Women’s Caribbean Championship begins on November 12 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The five-nation tournament, featuring The Bahamas, Jamaica, Suriname, the Virgin Islands, and host nation Guyana, will run until November 16, with the top three teams advancing to the 2026 Centrobasket Women’s Championship.
The championship will follow a round-robin format, ensuring every team faces each other once before the top three advance.
Top Rankin Wins $1M Feature at Mocha Turf Club.
Horse racing excitement returned to Mocha Village on Sunday as the Demerara Turf Club hosted its Day of Gymkhana and Racing, where Top Rankin took home the $1 million top prize after a dramatic finish.
Initially set as a three-horse race, the feature event became a duel between Top Rankin and World Boss after Risky Affair was withdrawn due to injury. However, tragedy struck when World Boss slipped on the second turn, leaving Top Rankin to cross the finish line unchallenged.
Other notable results included Rude Boy dominating Race One, Damage Control edging out rivals in Race Two, and Kiss overtaking Monica Time in a thrilling final sprint.
Guyanese Golfers Dominate at Surinamese Invitational
Team Guyana delivered a stellar performance at the 2025 DSB Surinamese Invitational in Paramaribo, with 13-time national champion Avinash Persaud clinching the Overall Winner title after two days of competition.
In the B Class, Patanjalee Persaud emerged victorious, followed by Chet Bowling in second. Meanwhile, Eureka Giddings finished second in the F Class, and Shanella London secured third in the E Class, while also winning Best Gross (Female) and Longest Drive titles on both days.
India Sweeps West Indies in Test Series Finale
India completed a 2-0 Test series sweep over the West Indies in New Delhi, sealing victory in the final Test on Day 5 with a commanding seven-wicket win.
Chasing just 58 runs, KL Rahul (58) and Dhruv Jurel (6) guided India to victory despite Roston Chase taking two wickets early.
Kuldeep Yadav, who claimed eight wickets in the match, was named Player of the Match, while Ravindra Jadeja received the Player of the Series award.
Earlier, India had won the first Test in Ahmedabad by an innings and 140 runs, exposing the West Indies’ continued struggles in subcontinental conditions.
New Amsterdam Stadium Nears Completion
The New Amsterdam Synthetic Track & Field Stadium is now 85 percent complete, according to an inspection conducted by Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sport Charles Ramson Jr. and Minister Steven Jacobs.
The ministers, accompanied by representatives from Regupol, the German firm handling track installation, confirmed that the six-week installation process began on October 12.
The facility, built to international standards, will be capable of hosting elite athletic meets. Final work on the football pitch, parking area, and fencing is ongoing, with the grass laying to be completed last to preserve the field’s integrity.
Construction of new spectator stands remains pending as procurement continues. If no delays occur, the facility is expected to be ready by the end of November 2025.
