Football: Mahaicony Technical Institute Crowned MODEC Champions
The 2026 MODEC Tertiary Football Tournament concluded on Saturday at the Queen’s College Ground in Georgetown with two high-scoring thrillers.
- The Grand Final: Mahaicony Technical Institute delivered a clinical performance to secure a dominant 6-3 victory over the Upper Corentyne Training Centre. The champions were led by a balanced attack featuring goals from Winton Hartman, Youance Francis, Omar Williams, Tyrel Delph, and Niron Thom.
- Third Place Playoff: In an equally explosive match, Essequibo Technical Institute secured the bronze with a 6-3 win over the New Amsterdam Technical Institute. Jim Carter, D’Angelo Davidson, Jamal Smith, Austin Hernandes, and Morries Henry all found the back of the net to seal the podium finish.
Basketball: Guyana Defends Home Court to Sweep Grenada 2-0
Despite a rocky start to the weekend, Guyana’s Senior Men’s National Team proved their regional dominance at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
- The Sweep: After Friday’s opening game was cancelled, Guyana took both remaining fixtures.
- Game 1 (Saturday): Guyana secured a 67-54 victory, anchored by Kemol Grimmond, who turned in a strong performance with 11 points and 7 rebounds.

Powerlifting: Andrew Bailey & Omar Satar Shine at Novice Championships
The Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPLF) identified its next generation of stars at St. Stanislaus College on Saturday during the Novice and Junior Championships.
- Novice Classic Best Lifter: Andrew Bailey took the top honors after winning the 83kg Men’s Open Raw Division. Bailey impressed with a 107.5kg Bench Press, a 225kg Deadlift, and a 155kg Squat.
- Junior Best Lifter: 18-year-old Omar Satar dominated the 83kg Junior Raw Category, recording an impressive 182.5kg Squat, 132.5kg Bench Press, and a 210kg Deadlift.
- Female Division: Charlotte Charles proved her versatility, securing victories in both the 69kg Women’s Master 1 Raw and the Women’s Open Raw categories.
Cricket: Jonte Thomas Destroys GNIC in Sherwin Williams T20 Cup
At the Malteenoes Sports Club Ground, the Malteenoes Warriors delivered a masterclass in bowling and clinical chasing.
- The Collapse: GNIC struggled to find rhythm, being bowled out for just 93 in 19.4 overs. Jonte Thomas was the architect of the destruction, finishing with stellar figures of 4-21.

Badminton: “Lil Threats” Take Season Opener in Mainstay
The Guyana Badminton Association successfully launched its 2026 season with an Air Badminton Tournament at the Motorcross Ground in Mainstay.
- The Format: 15 teams from six schools competed in the fast-paced Triples format.
- The Winners: Abram Zuil Secondary School’s Team “Lil Threats” emerged as the season’s first champions. Anna Regina Secondary School’s Team “Bomb Squad” secured 2nd place, while Team “Block List” and the “Aurora All Stars” rounded out the semi-finalists.
