West Indies Academy Rallies Behind Evelyn and Anderson to Edge Sri Lanka in Series Opener

BY DELWIN NEBLETT

COLOMBO, SRI LANKA — A masterful, unbeaten half-century by Damel Evelyn guided the West Indies Academy to a thrilling 2-wicket victory over the Sri Lanka Emerging XI on Monday during the opening match of their white-ball series at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo.

Opting to field first, the West Indies bowling unit tore through the host’s batting order, dismantling Sri Lanka for a modest 184 in 33.4 overs. Middle-order batsman Nipun Dhananjaya anchored the home side’s resistance with a patient 65, but his efforts were thoroughly undone by a relentless dual-spin and pace attack. Zishan Motara and Jediah Blades led the destruction, each picking up 3 wickets apiece.

The Academy’s run-chase turned into a nerve-shredding affair as the Sri Lankan spinners took regular wickets to trigger a mid-innings collapse. However, Damel Evelyn stood completely firm, anchoring the chase with a mature, unbeaten 77*. Guyana’s own Kevlon Anderson provided the critical offensive spark, smashing a brisk 58 off just 45 deliveries to tilt the momentum back to the Caribbean team. The tail held its nerve, pushing the score to 185-8 in 31 overs to secure a hard-fought, opening-day win.

Jayawardena’s Majestic Ton Pulls Sri Lanka Level Despite Anderson’s Fighting Fifty

BY DELWIN NEBLETT

COLOMBO, SRI LANKA — A spectacular, blistering century by opening batsman Sineth Jayawardena propelled the Sri Lanka Emerging XI to a commanding 125-run victory over the West Indies Academy earlier today at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground, effectively leveling their three-match One-Day series at 1-1.

Opting to bat first on a flat, batting-friendly surface, the Sri Lankan top-order made full use of the conditions, pulverizing the Academy’s bowling lines to post a massive, imposing total of 360 runs in their allotted 50 overs. Jayawardena spearheaded the onslaught with a masterclass innings of 118, finding regular boundaries all around the ground. Amidst the heavy scoring, spinner Zishan Motara once again stood out as the most restrictive bowler for the West Indies, returning commendable analytical figures of 3 for 48 in his 10-over allocation.

Faced with a daunting target of 361 for victory, the West Indies Academy’s response stuttered early under intense scoreboard pressure, losing critical top-order wickets within the initial powerplay. Guyanese standout Kevlon Anderson tried valiantly to reconstruct the chase, fighting through the spin trap to top-score with a composed, fluent 63. However, his dismissal triggered a rapid lower-order slide, and the Academy was eventually bowled out for 235 in 45.4 overs. With the series perfectly deadlocked, both squads are traveling across the capital city to prepare for the third and final decider, scheduled to be played at the Nondescripts Cricket Club Ground on Friday morning.
