HGP SPORTS PULSE – JANUARY 28, 2026

Athletics
On Tuesday, Minister within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Steven Jacobs met with members of the Athletics Association of Guyana National Under-20 squad currently preparing for qualification to the 2026 CARIFTA Games in Grenada.
Accompanied by AAG General Secretary James Cole, athletes Tishawn Easton, Javon Roberts, Skylar Charles, Onesi Dunn, Rodel Greene and Kaidon Persaud received much-needed athletic gear to support their preparations. Minister Jacobs expressed confidence in the athletes’ continued progress as they aim to represent Guyana on the regional stage.

Football
Action continued in the Georgetown Football Association Senior Men’s League on Tuesday at the Plaisance Community Centre Ground.
In the opening match, Camptown FC edged Riddim Squad FC 1–0, courtesy of a decisive strike from Deon Alfred. In the second fixture, Beacon FC secured a 2–1 victory over North Stars FC.
The league resumes on Thursday at the same venue, with Ordis FC facing Northern Rangers FC, followed by Pele FC versus Motherland FC.

Cricket – Women
Guyana produced a dominant performance against Jamaica in the CWI CG United Women’s Super50 Tournament at the Cumberland Playing Field in St. Vincent on Tuesday.
After winning the toss, Jamaica were dismissed for 77 in 27.3 overs. Ashmini Munisar led the bowling with 4–23, supported by Kaysia Schultz (2–16) and Tremaine Marks (2–7).
In reply, Guyana reached 77–5 in 27 overs, with Shabika Gajnabi unbeaten on 23 and Sheneta Grimmon adding 17. Guyana’s next match is against Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday at the Park Hill Playing Field.

Cricket – Men (T20I)
The first T20 International between the West Indies and South Africa was played at Boland Park in Paarl on Tuesday.
Batting first, the West Indies posted 173–7, led by Shimron Hetmyer’s 48 and Rovman Powell’s 29. George Linde claimed 3–25 for South Africa.
South Africa responded emphatically, reaching 176–1 in 17.5 overs. Player of the Match Aiden Markram struck a brilliant 86, supported by Ryan Rickelton’s 40, to secure a nine-wicket win. The second T20I will be played on Thursday at SuperSport Park, Centurion.

Cricket – Under-19 World Cup
In Super 6 action at the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup, the West Indies faced Australia at the Harare Sports Club earlier today.
Australia posted 314–7, with Oliver Peake scoring 109 and Nitesh Samuel adding 56. Jakeem Pollard (2–37) and R’Jai Gittens (2–45) led the Windies bowling.
In response, the West Indies reached 292–9. Zachary Carter and Joshua Dorne both recorded half-centuries, with Jewel Andrew contributing 44. Charles Lachmund’s 4–66 proved decisive as Australia won by 22 runs.
The West Indies Under-19s next face South Africa in a Super 6 fixture on Friday at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.
