BASKETBALL
As part of its ongoing engagements with national sports institutions, the National Sports Commission (NSC) recently met with executives of the Guyana Basketball Federation (GBF) to review activities, strengthen collaboration, and align plans for the future.
The Commission praised the Federation as one of Guyana’s most active and well-run sporting bodies in 2025. During the year, the GBF successfully hosted major international events, including the One Guyana 3×3 Quest and the Women’s Caribbean Championship, while also staging the largest basketball league in the Caribbean through the One Guyana Premier League.
The Federation expressed appreciation for the continued support of the NSC as it prepares an ambitious development agenda for 2026. The Commission reaffirmed its full backing and also noted the GBF’s recognition as Sports Association of the Year for 2024.
SCHOOLS BASKETBALL
In schools basketball, Queens College and St. Stanislaus College both recorded victories as league action continued on Friday.
Queens College defeated Marian Academy 48–14 at the Marian Court to remain unbeaten after two matches. Meanwhile, at the Burnham Hard Court, St. Stanislaus College secured a 48–39 win over St. Rose’s High.
Queens College now leads the standings with two wins, followed by Government Technical Institute, President’s College, and St. Stanislaus College. The league runs from January to March, featuring six schools in a double round-robin format.
HOCKEY
In hockey, the Old Fort Hockey Club Titans captured the men’s title at the Bounty Farm One-Day Outdoor Hockey Tournament, edging Pepsi Hikers 1–0 in the final. The decisive goal came late from Shaquon Favourite.
Both teams advanced through strong group and semifinal performances to reach the championship match. In the women’s competition, GBTI GCC Tigers secured the title after an unbeaten run, finishing with a victory over GCC Spice.
The event marked the opening outdoor hockey tournament of the 2026 season.
GOLF
In golf, Patanjilee Persaud took early control of the National Top Flight Golf League, leading after the opening round at the Lusignan Golf Course on Sunday.
Persaud posted the lowest gross and net scores to earn maximum points, despite experiencing equipment issues during his round. Videsh Persaud finished second, followed by Mike Mangal, Brian Hackett, and Spencer Hutchins.
The league continues weekly and remains open to new participants.
CRICKET
Finally in cricket, Cricket West Indies (CWI) has officially announced its 15-member squad for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, scheduled to run from February 7 to March 8 in India and Sri Lanka.
Led by Barbadian Shai Hope, the squad features six Guyanese players: Gudakesh Motie, Shimron Hetmyer, Romario Shepherd, Shamar Joseph, Sherfane Rutherford, and Quinton Sampson.
The squad also includes Jayden Seales, Rovman Powell, Brandon King, Akeal Hosein, Jason Holder, Matthew Forde, Roston Chase, and Johnson Charles.
