Boxing: President Ali Meets Hall of Famer Prince Naseem Hamed

His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali hosted a historic engagement recently with the legendary Prince Naseem Hamed. The former multiple-time World Featherweight Champion, an icon of the 1990s known for his unorthodox “Southpaw” style and theatrical ring entrances, met with the President to discuss the future of Guyanese boxing.

Talks centered on President Aliโ€™s vision to revitalize the sport locally. The President expressed deep honor in meeting the Hall of Famer, exploring potential avenues for the British superstar to contribute to the development of Guyanaโ€™s burgeoning boxing nursery and professional ranks.

Football: Guyanese Officials Excel at CONCACAF U-17 Qualifiers

Reflecting the rising standards of local officiating, four Guyanese representatives recently concluded successful stints at the 2026 CONCACAF Womenโ€™s Under-17 Qualifiers (January 24 โ€“ February 3).

  • On-Field Officials: Micah Erskine and Denisha Isaacs served as match officials.
  • Technical Support: Lenval Peart served as a Referee Assessor, while Natasha Lewis acted as a Technical Instructor.

The officials were deployed across venues in Curaรงao, Nicaragua, and Bermuda, signaling a high level of regional trust in the Guyana Football Federationโ€™s (GFF) refereeing development program.


Basketball: Schools League Standings Tighten Ahead of Friday Fixtures

The 2026 Schools Basketball League enters a critical fourth round this evening with triple-header action at multiple venues. Queen’s College and President’s College currently sit atop the leaderboard, both undefeated with 6 points.

Cricket: West Berbice Braces for Mr. Singh & Son Finale

The Cotton Tree Cricket Ground in Region 5 is the place to be this Sunday for the climax of the Mr. Singh and Son Construction Service Competition.

  • 9:30hrs (3rd Place Playoff): Cotton Tree Die Hard vs. Achievers Sports Club.
  • 13:30hrs (The Grand Final): Dโ€™Edwards Sports Club vs. Bush Lot United Sports Club.

Cricket: Georgetown U-15s Secure Unassailable Lead

Defending champions Team Georgetown have effectively retained their title in the DCB Inter-Association Under-15 50-Over Tournament after a crushing 10-wicket victory over East Coast.

East Coast was bundled out for just 57 runs, with Georgetown openers Lomar Seecharran (38)* and Neerav Persaud reaching the target in just 6.5 overs. With this win, Georgetown remains unbeaten and holds an uncatchable lead heading into the final round at Lusignan today against the DCB Select XI.
