Motor Racing: Shairaz Roshandin Elected GMR&SC President

The Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club (GMR&SC) has a new leader following one of the highest voter turnouts in its history. Mohamad Shairaz Roshandin secured a landslide victory at the Annual General Meeting, defeating incumbent Mahendra Boodhoo 123 to 61.

  • The Mandate: Members also approved a motion to extend the executive term from one to two years, allowing the new team more time to execute long-term projects.
  • Focus Forward: Roshandin’s immediate priority is the GT Challenge De Las Americas, set for July 11–12 at the South Dakota Circuit.

Badminton: Historic AirBadminton Tournament Set for Essequibo

In a first for the “Cinderella County,” the Guyana Badminton Association (GBA) will host a historic AirBadminton Tournament on March 6 at the Motocross Ground in Essequibo.

  • Development Path: The tournament is the culmination of years of outreach, including equipment donations to Aurora, Abram Zuil, and Anna Regina Multilateral schools, and a 2025 training session for 20 teachers led by Emilia Ramdhani.
  • The Format: AirBadminton is a wind-resistant version of the sport played on sand or grass. This “Sand Event” aims to develop regional talent in partnership with Badminton Pan Am.
  • Participating Schools: Kabakaburi, Aurora, Charity, and Abram Zuil Secondary.

Football: MODEC Tertiary Tournament Enters Quarterfinals

The inaugural Petra-organized MODEC Tertiary Football Tournament is down to the “Elite Eight.” On Saturday, the remaining teams received full playing kits during a ceremony at the Ministry of Education.

  • The Stakes: Teams are competing for a $300,000 grand prize dedicated to school development projects.

    • Feb 28: Quarterfinals at Scotts Ground, Berbice.

Football: Western Tigers Roar in Elite League Cup

The GFF 2026 Elite League Cup saw two decisive results at the National Training Centre in Providence on Saturday.

Cricket: Berbice Crowned U-16 Inter-County Champions

The “Ancient County” has once again asserted its dominance in youth cricket. Berbice emerged as champions of the GCB 2026 U-16 50-Overs Tournament after a rain-shortened final at Bourda.

  • Demerara’s Struggle: Batting first, Demerara was bowled out for 112. Captain Lomar Seecharan (35) provided the only real resistance against Berbice’s Ravindra Persaud, who took 3-20.
  • The Chase: Berbice reached 109-5 in 26.2 overs—well ahead of the DLS requirement—before the rain ended play. Trevor Reynolds (24) and Akash Ramdewar (19) anchored the innings to secure the 37-run victory.
