Suriname Takes IGG Title, Super 16 Cup Kicks Off, Golf & Cricket Action Highlights Weekend

Suriname Edges Guyana to Win 2025 Inter-Guiana Games

The 2025 Inter-Guiana Games concluded on Sunday with a nail-biting finish as Team Suriname claimed the overall championship, edging past host nation Guyana after two days of intense competition. Suriname topped the standings with 83 points, followed by Guyana with 75, and French Guiana close behind on 73.

While Surinameโ€™s consistency across multiple disciplines proved decisiveโ€”including victories in swimming, volleyball, and basketballโ€”Team Guyana delivered standout performances, securing wins in futsal, chess, and track and field.

Suriname has been officially named host of the 2026 Inter-Guiana Games.


Minister Jacobs Commends Unity Displayed at the 2025 IGG

Also on Sunday, Minister within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, Hon. Steven Jacobs, praised the spirit of unity and regional cooperation showcased throughout the 2025 Inter-Guiana Games.

Speaking at the closing ceremony in Georgetown, Minister Jacobs reaffirmed Guyanaโ€™s continued support for the Games and encouraged young athletes to deepen their understanding of the โ€œscience of the sportโ€ as they strive for future excellence.


Super 16 Cup Kicks Off with Dominant Wins

The 2025 Super 16 Cup football tournament began over the weekend with four matches played at the National Training Centre, Providence.

On Saturday, Annโ€™s Grove United secured a 2โ€“1 victory over Uitvlugt Warriors, with goals from Yohance Francis and Jermain Samuels. Dwayne St. Kitts scored for Uitvlugt.
In the second match, Santos FC registered a solid 2โ€“0 win over Camptown FC, courtesy of goals from Gerry Burnette and Cordel Hazel.

Sundayโ€™s fixtures saw Monedderlust FC dominate Buxton Stars 3โ€“0, with goals from Niron Thom, Stephon Moore, and Azainneo Benjamin.
Den Amstel FC also recorded a commanding victory, defeating Beacon FC with strikes from Shakeel King, Delon Lanferman, and Dwayne Peters.

The Super 16 Cup continues this Saturday with two additional matches at Providence.


Anand Persaud Wins 2025 PromoTech Golf Tournament

Golf action returned to the Lusignan Golf Course on Sunday where Anand Persaud captured the 2025 PromoTech title with an impressive net score of 66. Persaud also led the field with a gross 85.

Satrohan Tiwari finished second with a net 69, while Joseph Szeplaki placed third on 71.

Special prizes were awarded to:

  • Feroze Barkat โ€“ Best Gross
  • Joaan Deo โ€“ Ladiesโ€™ Best Net
  • Mortimer Wills โ€“ Longest Drive
  • Patrick Prashad โ€“ Nearest to the Pin

PromoTech representatives praised the strong turnout and confirmed plans to make the tournament an annual fixture.


Berbice and Essequibo Shine in Womenโ€™s Inter-County T20

Cricket action resumed in the 2025 GCB One Guyana Womenโ€™s Senior Inter-County T20 Tournament on Monday at the Lusignan Community Centre Ground.

In the dayโ€™s opening match, Berbice booked their place in the final with a commanding 7-wicket victory over Demerara.
Demerara posted 39โ€“3 in a truncated 11-over match, with Naomi and Cianna Barkoye scoring 11 each. Berbiceโ€™s Daniella Hicks impressed with figures of 2โ€“3.

Berbice responded with 40โ€“3, led by an unbeaten 13 from Plaffianna Millington. Hema Singh took 1โ€“5 in a losing effort.

In match two, Essequibo remained unbeaten after defeating the Hinterland All Stars by 78 runs.
Essequibo posted 111โ€“4 (20 overs), with captain Laurene Williams top-scoring with a brilliant *51 (69)**.
Hinterland were bowled out for 33, with Tremaine Marks producing a destructive spell of 5โ€“7 (4). Grazil Thomas scored 13 for Hinterland, while Kumarie Persaud claimed three wickets for Essequibo.
