Santa Rosa Primary Crowned Champions of 2025 MVP Sports Girls U-11 Pee Wee Football Tournament

Action in the 2025 MVP Sports Girls U-11 Pee Wee Football Tournament concluded on Saturday at the Ministry of Education Ground, with Santa Rosa Primary lifting the championship trophy after a thrilling 3โ€“2 victory over Waramuri Primary in the grand final.

Rovenna Johnson delivered a standout performance, scoring twice, while Naomi Henry added another to secure the title and the $100,000 top prize. Waramuriโ€™s Altia Marks put up a strong fight with two goals in the narrow defeat.

Johnson, who finished the tournament with an extraordinary 19 goals, was also named the Most Valuable Player.

In the third-place playoff, Marian Academy edged St. John the Baptist Primary 1โ€“0, courtesy of a decisive strike from Haley Haberkorn.


GDF Women Edge Police to Close 2025 Division 1 Season; Western Tigers Dominate

The 2025 Division 1 Womenโ€™s League wrapped up on Friday at the National Training Centre in Providence with two contrasting final fixtures.

Western Tigers delivered a commanding performance in the opening match, defeating Monedderlust FC 5โ€“0 to close their season in emphatic fashion.

In the feature matchup, champions Guyana Defence Force (GDF) FC secured a hard-fought 1โ€“0 win over the Guyana Police Force FC. Sandra Johnson produced the matchโ€™s only goalโ€”a sensational strike that sealed the clubโ€™s final victory of the campaign.


GCB Announces Guyanaโ€™s National U-13 Squad for Barbados Series

The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) has officially released the National Under-13 squad set to face Barbados in a five-match 40-overs series scheduled for December 13โ€“19 in Georgetown.

Encampment begins Thursday, December 11.

The squad will be led by wicket-keeper/batter Lomar Seecharran, with Sahid Gajnabi serving as vice-captain. Also selected are Nathaniel Ramkhelawan, Timothy Ramdat, Afraz Ali, Makai Dowlin, Afraz Khan, Fayyad Baksh, Ashton Collins, Deshawn Ramnauth, Adrian Emmanuel, Jasani Craig, De Marcus Thomas, and Jaden Ganpat.

Standby players include Aaron DaCosta, Khemraj Bharrat, Markanthong Obermuller, Tilak Eshwar, Kelvin Henry, and Mario Singh.

The team will be coached by Ameer Rahaman, Kumar Bishundial, and Clive Holder.


Essequibo Impress as First Two Rounds of Womenโ€™s Senior Inter-County Tournament Played

The opening two rounds of the 2025 GCB One Guyana Womenโ€™s Senior Inter-County Tournament were completed over the weekend at the LBI Community Centre Ground, with Essequibo and Berbice registering key victories.

Round 1 โ€“ Saturday

Game 1:
Essequibo defeated Demerara by five runs after posting 101โ€“7 from 20 overs. Shonette Belgrave top-scored with 22, supported by Tremaine Marks (20) and captain Laurene Williams (18).
Demeraraโ€™s reply saw captain Kaysia Schultz contribute 17, but they were restricted to 96โ€“7. Analesia Dโ€™Aguiar led the bowling with 2โ€“6.

Game 2:
Berbice produced a dominant 94-run victory over the Hinterland Allstars. After scoring 139โ€“6, Berbice bowled out Hinterland for just 45.
Sheneta Grimmond top-scored with 27, while Crystal Durant added 17.
Player-of-the-Match Kianna Leach was exceptional, taking 4โ€“3.

Round 2 โ€“ Sunday

Game 1:
Essequibo defeated Berbice by 24 runs in a rain-affected 15-over match, posting 118โ€“7. Belgrave made 21 from 13 balls, and Dโ€™Aguiar remained unbeaten on 30 from 27.
Berbice were held to 94โ€“7, with Plaffianna Millington scoring 22 and Durant 13.

Game 2:
Demerara reached 61โ€“0 in 9 overs, with Naomi Barkoye (31*) and Tilleya Madramootoo (20*) unbeaten when rain halted play. The match ended without further action.


Windies Draw Opening Test After Greavesโ€™ Heroics Keep Series Level

The West Indies produced a remarkable final-day fightback to draw the opening Test of the three-match series against New Zealand at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Saturday.

Set a target of 531, the Windies resumed needing 319 more runs with six wickets in hand. They reached an impressive 457โ€“6, led by a magnificent unbeaten double-century from Justin Greaves, who finished on 202 from 388 balls.

Shai Hope added 24 to his overnight score before departing for 140. Guyanese wicket-keeper Tevin Imlach fell LBW to Zachary Foulkes.

Veteran pacer Kemar Roach, in a defining all-round performance, struck his maiden Test half-century and remained unbeaten on 58. His 180-run partnership with Greaves ensured the match ended in a hard-earned draw.

The series remains level heading into the second Test, which bowls off Tuesday at 18:00 hrs at the Basin Reserve in Wellington.
