Chess

Guyana Names Squads for Inter-Guiana Chess Championship

The Guyana Chess Federation has officially announced its male and female squads for the 2025 Inter-Guiana Chess Competition, set for December 5–7 at the National Racquet Centre in Georgetown.

Two teams—each comprising four males and four females between ages 14 and 18—will compete in a 60-minute plus 30-second increment format.

Representing Guyana on the girls’ side are:

  • WCM Aditi Joshi (15)
  • Ciel Clement (16)
  • Maliha Rajkumar (17)
  • Italy Ton-Chung (18)

Selected for the boys’ team are:

  • Kyle Couchman (16)
  • CM Sachin Pitamber (15)
  • Micaiah Enoe (16)
  • Alexander Zhang (15)

FIDE Master Anthony Drayton and Candidate Master Taffin Khan will coach the teams.


Football (Youth)

Santa Rosa, Waramuri to Meet in Historic Girls U-11 Final

For the first time in tournament history, two Region One teams—Waramuri Primary and Santa Rosa Primary—will contest the grand final of the 2025 MVP Sports Girls U-11 Pee Wee Competition.

In the first semi-final, Santa Rosa eliminated defending champions Marian Academy after a tight 1–1 draw. Marian’s Ella Fernandes and Santa Rosa’s Rovena Johnson each found the net before Santa Rosa held their nerve to win 5–4 on penalties.

In semi-final number two, Waramuri defeated St. John the Baptist Primary 2–0, with goals from Alina Lewis and Altia Marks.

The final will be played on Saturday, December 6, at the Ministry of Education Ground, Carifesta Avenue. Marian Academy and St. John the Baptist will meet in the third-place playoff.


Football (Senior)

Omari Glasgow to Suit Up for Slingerz FC in GFF Super-16

Guyana’s all-time leading goal scorer, Omari Glasgow, will feature as a guest player for Slingerz FC in the upcoming GFF Super-16 Tournament.

The 22-year-old Chicago Fire striker—fresh off goals against Bonaire and Antigua & Barbuda—returns to local football for the first time since leaving Western Tigers. His arrival is expected to boost the Elite League champions’ title campaign significantly.

As a top-four finisher in the last Elite League season, Slingerz FC will join the Super-16 in the quarter-finals, where they will face the winner among Buxton Stars, Monedderlust, and Potaro.


Golf

Persaud, Dhani Shine at 2025 Romel Bhagwandin Golf Tournament

The Lusignan Golf Club hosted the 2025 Romel Bhagwandin-sponsored tournament on Sunday, producing standout performances across all flights.

Anand Persaud claimed the Overall Best Net title with a score of 31, while Vishal Dhani captured the Overall Best Gross award with 36.

Category winners include:

  • Beginners: Karamchand Persaud — Gross 11
  • Flight 18–36: Anand Persaud — Gross 40, Handicap 9, Net 31
  • Flight 10–18: Pur Persaud — Gross 40, Handicap 8, Net 32
  • Flight 0–9: Vishal Dhani — Gross 36, Handicap 3, Net 33

Special awards went to:

  • Longest Drive: Vickey Dhani
  • Nearest to the Pin: Jaipaul Sykhanand
  • Most Honest Player: Phillip Haynes
  • Best Dressed Player: Robin Tiwari

Boxing

Amsterdam and Allicock Depart for IBA Men’s Elite World Championships

Guyana’s top amateur boxers Desmond Amsterdam and Keevin Allicock, accompanied by coach Lennox Daniels, have departed for Dubai to compete in the 2025 IBA Men’s Elite World Championships, running December 2–13.

The tournament is part of the International Boxing Association’s two-week Festival of Boxing and marks a significant return for both fighters.

Olympian Keevin Allicock enters with renewed focus, while Desmond Amsterdam—Guyana’s first-ever AMBC Elite Championships bronze medalist—continues to assert himself among the Americas’ finest. Both fighters recently transitioned into the professional ranks, but GBA President Steve Ninvalle says their discipline and experience will serve them well on the world stage.

The Championships feature record prizes:

  • Gold: US$300,000
  • Silver: US$150,000
  • Bronze: US$75,000
