Schoolboys’ Futsal Debuts in President’s Championship
The Schoolboys’ segment of the President’s Futsal Championship kicked off on Tuesday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, marking the first time this category has been added to the prestigious tournament.
Brickdam Secondary opened their campaign with a narrow 3–2 win over Vreed-en-Hoop Secondary, while Dolphin Secondary recorded a convincing 4–1 victory over Cummings Lodge.
Saint Stanislaus College delivered one of the biggest statements of the day with a dominant 7–0 performance against North Ruimveldt Secondary. West Ruimveldt Secondary matched that momentum, overwhelming Hope Secondary with an 8–0 victory.
The competition is being played in a round-robin format, and admission to all school fixtures is free.
Allicock and Amsterdam Exit IBA World Championships
Guyanese boxers Keevin Allicock and Desmond Amsterdam bowed out of the Round of 16 at the 2025 International Boxing Association Men’s World Championships in Dubai.
Allicock fought valiantly through three competitive rounds but lost on points to Portugal’s Sergio Rodrigues Mendes.
Amsterdam’s exit came under more dramatic circumstances. After controlling the opening round, an accidental clash of heads halted his middleweight bout just before the bell. Following a prolonged review, officials awarded the decision to Moldova’s Davron Bozorov—ending Guyana’s participation in the tournament and leaving spectators stunned.
Essequibo Win T20 Title in Super Over Thriller
The 2025 GCB/Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sport One Guyana Women’s Senior Inter-County T20 Tournament concluded on Tuesday with a nail-biting final between Berbice and Essequibo at the Lusignan Community Centre Ground.
Batting first, Essequibo were dismissed for 62 in 16.3 overs, with Player of the Match Latoya Williams top-scoring with 20* (17). Berbice’s Plaffianna Millington produced a devastating spell of 4–3 from 3.3 overs.
Berbice struggled in response, also being bowled out for 62, as only Sherica Campbell (13) reached double figures. Kumarie Persaud and Yonnette Welcome claimed two wickets each to force a Super Over.
In the decider, Berbice posted just five runs, losing captain Sheneta Grimmond to a run-out. Essequibo then held their nerve, with Annestecia Valenzuela and Shonette Belgrave securing victory with disciplined batting.
Essequibo completed a clean sweep of both the 50-over and T20 titles. Captain Laurene Williams finished as the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 85 runs, while Tremaine Marks was named MVP after taking eight wickets—the most in the competition.
President Ali Delivers Gear to Hinterland All-Stars
His Excellency President Dr. Mohammed Irfaan Ali has delivered on his commitment to support the Hinterland All-Stars women’s cricket team following the conclusion of their debut Inter-County season.
After Tuesday’s final, players received fully stocked cricket gear bags courtesy of the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport.
In the absence of the ministers, FL Sports Director John Ramsingh made the presentation and urged the athletes to use the equipment to sharpen their skills and boost women’s cricket participation in their home communities.
Windies Dismissed for 205 in Second Test vs New Zealand
The second Test between West Indies and New Zealand got underway Tuesday at the Basin Reserve in Wellington, with the regional side bowled out for 205 in 75 overs.
Blair Tickner (4–32) and Michael Rae (3–67) led the New Zealand attack. Shai Hope top-scored for the West Indies with a patient 48 (80), while opener John Campbell contributed 44 (87).
New Zealand closed Day 1 on 24 without loss from nine overs, with Devon Conway unbeaten on 16 and captain Tom Latham on 9.
