It was a historic weekend for Guyanese sports as the new Bayroc National Stadium in Linden made its competitive debut with record-breaking performances, while local stars in squash, golf, and football solidified their dominance in 2026.


Athletics: Records Shattered at Bayroc Inaugural Meet

The Bayroc National Stadium in Linden officially opened its synthetic track to competition on Saturday, February 7, with a high-octane invitational that saw Guyanaโ€™s elite sprinters set the bar for the new facility.

  • Sprinting Excellence: National 100m record holder Emmanuel Archibald proved why he is the fastest man in the country, clocking a blistering 10.19s to take the Men’s 100m Invitational. Kenisha Phillips dominated the women’s equivalent in 11.64s.
  • Stadium Record: Arinze Chance left his mark on history by setting the inaugural stadium record in the Men’s 400m, storming to victory in 46.49s. Delicia Wilkie secured the women’s 400m title in 58.07s.

Cycling: Roberts Retains Presidency of Flying Ace

In Berbice, the Flying Ace Cycle Club (FACC) held its annual election of office bearers in New Amsterdam. Randolph Roberts was re-elected as President and will also serve as Treasurer.

  • New Leadership: New Amsterdam Mayor Wainwright McIntosh was appointed as the club’s new Patron, succeeding long-serving businessman Errol Alphonso.
  • 2026 Season: The clubโ€™s first major competitive event is slated to be the Annual Mashramani Road Race.

Squash: Khalil and Fraser Reign Supreme at BCQS Masters

The 2026 BCQS Masters Tournament concluded at the Georgetown Club on Saturday night with Guyana asserting its regional dominance.

  • Men’s 30-44: Jason-Ray Khalil successfully defended home turf, defeating Barbados’ Shawn Simpson in a hard-fought final. Lester Lewis took the Plate title in the same division.
  • Women’s 35+: Lydia Fraser emerged as the champion after defeating Allison Smith-Padmore of Barbados.
  • Notable Winners: The night also saw victories for Joseph Mekdeci, Regan Pollard, and Robert Cameron, among others.

Golf: Bacchus Blazes to Victory at Lusignan

Under bright sunshine at the Lusignan Golf Club, Kishan Bacchus produced a stellar performance to win the ANSA McAL Aperol Spritz Golf Tournament on Sunday.

Football: Mixed Results in GFA Senior League

The Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Senior Men’s League continued its intense schedule at the Plaisance Community Centre Ground.

  • Draw at Plaisance: Black Pearl FC and North Stars FC battled to a 2-2 stalemate. Goals for Black Pearl came from Sherwin Evans and Joshua Samuels, while North Stars relied on Jaslon Deen and Charles Chester.
  • Riddim Squad Wins: Riddim Squad FC secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Beacon FC, thanks to a brace from Wendell Joseph.
  • Tonight’s Fixture: Action returns to Plaisance tonight as Pele FC takes on Northern Rangers FC, followed by Ordis FC vs. Eastveldt FC.
